so quiet

the riot

it is the silence of the riot
that hynotizes
it is the stillness of the air
the sensory shock that stops you
catches your breath
holds you
like an ocean

there is no plan in a riot
no sense of order
nothing to grab hold of
like after an earthquake
when your feet can't trust the ground
it's walking on water

the science of a riot is silence
so quiet you can hear freedom
ringing in your ears
like standing on the coast of Africa
peace overwhelms
and lifts you above the pressure

time stops in a riot
suspended like a pendulum in mid arc
it's that last intake of breath
that you hold in and hold onto
like the sweetest chocolate ever tasted.
